Broken Rib Treatment

The main treatment for a broken rib is to take a pain reliever medicine because it makes your breathing hard and painful and if you don’t breathe normally or deeply you will have pneumonia.

Single Fractured Rib Treatment

Person with single broken rib without any other associated injury cause by the said broken ribs may be treated and can stay in their home after hospital check-up.

  • Pain reliever medicine should be taken regularly                                                    - Pain while breathing will last for a couple of weeks, during this time patient should take pain reliever medicine regularly.
  • Extra rest and relaxation                                                                                          -  Have extra rest and relaxation this will help your broken rib to heal faster, refrain from doing strenuous activities.
  • Cough frequently                                                                                                      - Coughing frequently will prevent pneumonia cause of the phlegm and mucus building up in your lungs. Coughing  is  really painful but regardless of the pain you need to cough frequently.
  • Bandaging only the fractured area                                                                            -  It’s not good to put a bandage all around your body because it’s hard for you to breathe deeply and this will cause pneumonia. Bandaging only the fractured area this will stabilize the rib and it will reduce the pain.
  • Hot and Cold Compression                                                                                        - A hot or cold light compression on the fractured area will reduce the swelling and pain. Using an ice pack and heating pad, just put it on the injured area for about 10-15 minutes every hour.


Multiple Fractured Rib Treatment

Patients with multiple fractured ribs are required to be admitted in the hospital for proper care and treatment. Multiple fractured ribs mostly injured the lungs and also the other organs, that’s why it’s highly recommended for the patient to be admitted in the hospital.
